Iolani’s Obrey will
play for BYU

Iolani's Kainoa Obrey, last season's Gatorade State Player of the Year, was expected to sign a letter of intent today to play baseball for Brigham Young.

Obrey, who played third, first and pitched, helped Iolani win state titles in 1997 and '98 as well as three Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles.

The 1998 ILH Player of the Year turned down scholarship offers to play at Hawaii and San Francisco, and a walk-on offer from California. He also attracted interest from several Major League teams.

Obrey is expected to play third base for the Cougars.

Riegger wins golf title

Ko Olina's Johnny Riegger won the Aloha Section PGA Assistant Professional Championship by three strokes yesterday at the Makena North Course on Maui.

Riegger shot a final-round 72 for a 36-hole total of 143. Ed Tischler of the Koolau Golf Club was second at 146 with his second 73.

Brian Stock (Kapalua Plantation) and 1998 champion Henry Sieradski (Kaneohe Klipper), were next at 147.

Riegger will represent Hawaii in the National Assistants tournament Nov. 9-12 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Maui Publinx qualifiers

Dawn Kaneshiro shot a 76 Saturday to qualify for the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links golf tournament along with Rose Pagan and Marjorie Deigert.

The Maui qualifying was held at the Kapalua Village Course. Three more sectional qualifiers will be held on Hawaii, Kauai and Oahu to determine seven more Hawaii golfers for the national tournament June 22-27 at Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.

Molokai baseball 'Bash'

The Molokai community will celebrate the high school baseball team's state championship victory with a big "Bash" Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club in Kaunakakai. It is open to the public.

Folker All-American swimmer

Hawaii's Nick Folker was named a first-team All-American swimmer in the 100-yard freestyle event, received honorable mention in the 50-yard freestyle event and shared honorable mention with UH teammates Greg Phillips, Jeff Stanford and Eddie Lovell in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, UH announced yesterday.

Maui Open on tap

The 54-hole Maui Open will be held June 4-6 with professional and championship golfers playing at the Kapalua Plantation, Kaanapali North and Wailea Gold courses.

A- and B-flight golfers will play in low-net competition, with the A-flighters playing at Silversword, Sandalwood and Makena South, and the B-flighters at Dunes at Maui Lani, Makena North and Sandalwood over the three days. A pro-am will be held at Wailea Gold June 3.

Entry fee is $160 for the 54-hole tournament, sponsored by the Maui Golf Association.

Rainbow Open deadline

June 8 is the deadline to enter the 26th Sports Shinko Rainbow Open, scheduled for June 18-20 at the Mililani Golf Club.

The 54-hole tournament will have four flights, including one for professionals, who will compete for a $15,000 purse, with the winner getting $5,000.
