Kailua Beach fish
kill is puzzling

Question: What's with all the fish kill at Kailua Beach on May 14? I was walking there, about 7 p.m., and saw 8-inch halalu scattered all over the shore, about every 30 yards, from the Kaneohe end of Kailua Bay almost to Kalama Beach. It was low tide, and they were about 10 feet down from the high-tide reach of the waves. The fish were intact and looked like they beached themselves. Interestingly, I could see only halalu and no other species of fish.

Answer: The state Department of Health knew nothing about any fish kill, said spokesman Patrick Johnston. "We didn't receive any reports."

Something like this should be reported immediately to the department's Clean Water Branch at 586-4309.

Even if people report such sightings to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, the report is relayed to the Clean Water Branch because "we're the folks who are supposed to deal with those things," Johnston said.

Does any reader have a possible explanation?

Q: The phone card I have has 30 cents left on it. It will not be accepted by the pay phone. Do you know how I can get my 30 cents back from GTE Hawaiian Tel?

A: If you have an unused balance of less than 35 cents on the GTE SmartCard, write to GTE SmartCard Refund, Attention: PARS coordinator, Mailcode: IlllBMI, 110 East Monroe, Bloomington, IL 61701.

Send your name, mailing address, phone number, plus the card, noting how much you have left on the card.

In return for your unused 30 cents, you will receive a dollar card, which will allow you to make two calls. You do not have to pay for that card, but you also cannot get a refund for anything left on that dollar card.

The "SmartCard" has a number, 1-888-SMART-82, to call for such information.

Auwe

To the mean old man driving a light blue car on the Pali Highway on April 30, who refused to let me merge and pass him.

When I tried to pass, you intentionally sped up, then gave me the stink eye. Little did you know that I was trying to catch up with a funeral procession. When I waved to a friend to let me cut in front of her at the Kamehameha Highway intersection, you honked your horn, yelled and waved your finger at me. May you understand the meaning of the aloha spirit before your time is soon up. If not, I suggest you buy an air conditioner for your long, hot afterlife. -- Name withheld

Mahalo

To the couple driving toward town on the freeway about 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, just past the Pearl City cutoff. If they hadn't brought to my attention that the tailgate of my truck was down, I would have lost my stuff, including a basketball, soccer ball, Nike shoes and my cooler. Just think of the potential of causing an accident on the freeway! Boy, I am lucky and happy that people in the islands do care about the other guy. -- No name

Illegal seizure?

To the reader who sent in a question regarding confiscated money seven years ago at Honolulu Airport: Please call or write back with more information, such as who exactly searched you and under what conditions you were forced to give up the money. You can remain anonymous, but it's difficult to get an answer without more details.
