McBeanies are back!

McDonald's is launching Beanie Baby Part 3 tomorrow, offering a new line of the insanely popular teenie toys.

The previous two Beanie Baby issues touched off a mania of collecting nationwide.

The 12 new toys are free with Happy Meals, or $1.69 with any other purchase. On top of that, McDonald's is offering four International Bears at $2.49 with any purchase. A portion of these proceeds will go to Ronald McDonald House charities. All supplies are limited. Expect long lines.

In Cheryl Flaharty's "The Time Falling Bodies
Take to Light," balloons represent the fall of man.

Dancing bodies
lighter than air

Iona Pear Dance Theatre celebrates its 13th anniversary with concerts tomorrow and Saturday combining Eastern Butoh with Western modern dance idioms, plus two world premieres by artistic director Cheryl Flaharty.

The concert, entitled "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light," will explore what Flaharty calls the turning point in her life as she turns 40.

In the feature work, company assistant director Sami L.A. Akuna performs the part of Lucifer to Dennis Miller's God. The piece also features 200 helium balloons in depicting the fall of man and the separation of the gravity-bound body from the soul.

"At some point in your life you realize you're done falling and must face the push through gravity to ascend," said Flaharty, a past recipient of the Hawaii State Dance Council Baciu Award for "cutting edge" work and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship.

Also to be featured are a retrospective of favorite pieces from the company repertoire, including the HSDC Choreographic Award winning works, "Money," and "Eve," a work for five women identically dressed as Barbies.

The concerts will take place at 8 p.m. both nights at Hawaii Theatre. Tickets are available at the theater box office at $20, $25 and $30, with a $5 senior and student discount available. Tickets may also be charged by calling 528-0506.

The concert is presented by the Nova Arts Foundation and supported in part by the SFCA.

You gotta love Teddy

Teddy bear artists from throughout America, Japan and Australia will gather at the Ala Moana Hotel Sunday for an All Teddy Bear Show and Sale themed "East Meets West."

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be 50 tables featuring the artists works, including bears from Hawaii's Norine Oshiro and Deedre Hauger.

A highlight will be the introduction of the 1999 Good Bears of the World Raffle Bear, a 16-inch bear made of gold distressed mohair, shown at right. The bear, dubbed Happy Heart, was designed by Beverly Matteson Port.

Funds raised from the event will help fund GBW Hawaii den charitable activities.

Admission to the show is $5 for adults and $1 for children under 12. The Ala Moana Hotel is at 410 Atkinson Drive.
