It’s crunch time for
UH softball team

The once-beaten Hawaii and Utah softball teams met today in an elimination game of the Western Athletic Conference championship tournament at Fresno, Calif.

It was loser out and winner on to the title game later today.

The Utes beat the Wahine, 4-1, yesterday behind the four-hit pitching of Sarah Farnworth. Kelly Gentle, tagged for three runs with two out in the third inning, took the loss.

HPU down, not out

Humboldt State's B.J. Helfrich won a 1-0 pitchers' duel with Hawaii Pacific's Susie Schoales yesterday, giving the Sea Warriors an uphill road to the NCAA Division II West Region softball title at Davis, Calif.

To advance to next week's nationals, HPU needed to beat Cal State Bakersfield in an elimination game today and then win two from unbeaten Humboldt State.

Before taking their first loss yesterday, the Sea Warriors defeated CS Bakersfield, 2-0, as Jennifer Monzon scattered seven hits for her 15th shutout of the season.

Williams leads Jennie K.

Kari Lee Williams, the 1994 champion, took a four-stroke lead into today's second round of the 49th Jennie K. Invitational golf tournament.

Williams shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club course. Second, at 77, was Randi Sakihara. Makota Miyata and Emi Anamizu were tied for third with 78s.

The 54-hole women's tournament winds up tomorrow.

Top-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii trimmed Abilene Christian, 5-0, yesterday for its 29th victory without a loss and a berth opposite Georgia College in today's semifinals of the NCAA Division II national women's tennis tournament at Pensacola, Fla.
