Fueling up at
Hawaiian Airlines

Edward W. Pinion will use his knowledge of jet fuel for purchasing duties at Hawaiian Airlines Inc. Purchasing is 25 percent of the airline's operating costs and fuel --at 16 percent of operating costs -- is the largest purchase. Hawaiian Airlines has worked through Northwest Airlines Corp. for most fuel purchases.

"We have the opportunity to get into the business ourselves with a focus on local and West Coast markets," Pinion said.

He most recently was manager of aviation fuels for BHP Hawaii Inc. and Tesoro Petroleum Corp. Pinion also was commander of the Defense Fuel Region, Pacific, and commander of the Defense Logistics Agency, Pacific, at Camp H.M. Smith. He was responsible for petroleum logistics and planning. Pinion also was director of facilities management at the Defense Fuel Supply Center in Virginia. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of South Carolina and a master's degree in petroleum management from the University of Kansas.
