We reported way back in February that the musical "Miss Saigon" would be opening in Honolulu this fall, but musical fans may need to continue waiting until summer to learn the answer to the question: Will Lea Salonga star as Kim in the award-winning role she created on Broadway?

Yet decisions will have to made quickly regarding attending the production. Subscription tickets for a "Best of Broadway" package that includes "Miss Saigon" go on sale Saturday.

"Of course we would love to have her," said "Miss Saigon" producer Peter Lawrence. "But it's way to early to start casting because performers are still under contract with current shows and those don't expire (until this summer). We'll start casting when those contracts end."

Lea's mother Ligaya Salonga told the Star-Bulletin by phone from New York yesterday that it's difficult to determine what Salonga's decision will be.

Ligaya Salonga said, "She doesn't have a strong thing for it because it comes right after five months of performing the role on Broadway.

"Honestly, I don't know think so," she said. "She knows people (in Hawaii) want to see her, but right now we haven't even thought about it. Let's talk again in June."

"Miss Saigon," famous for its dozens of complicated scene shifts, hundreds of cues and 91 automated special effects -- including a helicopter landing, will be at the Blaisdell Concert Hall from Oct. 7 through Nov. 14, with an option to extend the run an additional two weeks to Nov. 28.

Eagle Eye Entertainment, of Toronto, which has brought to Honolulu other major musical productions -- "The Phantom of the Opera," "Les Miserables, and "CATS" -- is bringing "Saigon" as part of its "Best of Broadway" subscription series package. The package includes the musical comedy "2 Pianos, 4 Hands," Jan. 18 through 30, 2000, at the Hawai'i Theatre; and "Fame: The Musical," March 28 through April 9, 2000, at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Ticket packages for the three shows are $65.75 to $181.75, plus service fees. Single ticket sale dates will be announced later.

"Best of Broadway" subscribers will save 10 percent on tickets, though not for Friday and Saturday shows.

Subscriptions are for the first full performance week of "Miss Saigon, Oct. 12 through 17, and the first week of performances for "2 Pianos, 4 Hands" and "Fame: The Musical," said Eagle Eye's Ronald Andrew.

Subscription tickets go on sale 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Blaisdell box office, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Telephone orders can be made by calling 526-4400.
