Haar’s drawings
a testament

In the early 1990s, Francis Haar, who had a long and active career in photography and documentary filmmaking, began complaining about losing his memory. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

To keep his mind active, he began drawing. His son Tom Haar now says, "He took to it like fish in water from the very start.

"We were truly amazed at how well he was able to render objects on paper," he said, considering the level of concentration necessary for the task.

Francis Haar died in December 1997, but the drawings and brushwork he created -- at least one drawing a day -- are on view at Queen Emma Gallery at Queen's Medical Center through May 2.

Tom Haar, who curated the exhibition, "Nagypapa," meaning "grandfather" in Hungarian, describes the work as "a testament to one family's coping mechanism with art, caregiving and its reward."

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon weekends and holidays.

Manhattan post for Wong

Samuel Wong, Honolulu Symphony music director, has been named music director of New York's prestigious Mannes College of Music in Manhattan and is responsible for all conducting programs for the school's orchestra.

Wong, who last month signed a three-year contract extension with the Honolulu Symphony, is former music director of the Ann Arbor Symphony and New York Youth Symphony orchestra. It's a common practice for music directors to hold more than one post simultaneously, said Michael Tiknis, Honolulu Symphony executive directory.

"The symphony is delighted that Sam Wong was chosen for such an important post at such a prestigious school," he said. "This is is further acknowledgement of his extraordinary talent."
