Chiyotenzan remains
undefeated in
sumo tournament

OSAKA -- Lower-ranked wrestler Chiyotenzan added another victory and remained the sole leader at a perfect 6-0 Friday, the sixth day of the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

Hawaiian ozeki (champion) Musashimaru also added a victory and stood at 4-2.

One victory behind No. 9 maegashira (senior wrestler) Chiyotenzan were five wrestlers -- yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana, ozeki (champion) Takanonami, komusubi (junior champion second class) Akinoshima, komusubi Tochiazuma and No. 13 maegashira (senior wrestler) Ohinode.

Chiyotenzan drove out No. 5 maegashira Tochinonada (4-2) from behind.

In the day's final bout, yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana shoved out komusubi Kaio after exchanging fierce hand thrusts at each other's necks.

Yokozuna Wakanohana (3-3) caught No. 3 maegashira Terao's thigh, pushing him out of the ring. Terao slipped to 1-5.

Takanonami threw down No. 2 maegashira Shikishima (1-5), tightly gripping his loin belt.

Akinoshima sent out No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan (3-3), or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, from behind.

Ohinode (5-1) pulled No. 8 maegashira Tochinowaka's arm, sending him to the ground. Tochinowaka is 3-3.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, hugged No. 2 maegashira Tosanoumi (2-4) from both sides and bulldozed him out.

Newly promoted ozeki (champion) Chiyotaikai, winner of the last tournament in January, was tripped by top-ranked maegashira (senior wrestler) Kotonishiki, who quickly sidestepped to avoid the opponent's push. Kotonishiki is 2-4.

In the 26-member juryo division, just below the senior makuuchi division, No. 1-ranked Kyokutenho (3-3), or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, shoved out No. 5-ranked Daishoho (1-5).

No. 11-ranked Hoshitango (3-3), or Argentine Imach Marcelo Salomon, was tossed out by No. 8-ranked Toyonoumi (1-5).

In makushita, the top junior division, No. 22-ranked Wakaazuma, or Yoshinobu Kuroda from Brazil, pushed out No. 24-ranked Umenosato for his first victory against two defeats. No. 27-ranked Hoshiandesu (2-1), or Argentine Jose Antonio Juarez, was shoved out by No. 23-ranked Aoba.

In jonidan, the third highest junior division, No. 20-ranked Kuniazuma, or Brazilian Vander Ramos, drove out No. 24-ranked Sasaki for a 3-0.

Wrestlers in junior divisions have only seven bouts during the 15-day tournament.
