THE Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recognized the Hawaii International Film Festival as a licensee for "Oscar Night America."

That means on Oscar night, March 21, HIFF's annual Academy Awards fund-raising party will join 34 other Oscar Night America parties across the United States.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences developed Oscar Night America as a way for at least some of Oscar party events to benefit from a relationship with the big show in Hollywood.

HIFF's Academy Awards party has been a successful fund-raising event for since 1992. Guests will be able to see the awards ceremony before it's televised on network TV.

Only one charity party in a given city may participate in Oscar Night America. The Academy provides Oscar Night America parties with the same Academy Awards programs handed out at the Awards Presentation in Los Angeles. Official parties also are permitted to use the image of the copyrighted Oscar statuette on materials.

This year's event will be in the Bankers' Club on the top floor of the First Hawaiian Bank building in downtown Honolulu.

Admission includes dinner by the chef at the Bankers' Club and all beverages; including Piper Heidsieck champagne, an assortment of wines from Baden Wines International Ltd., and draught beer from Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant.

The Academy is providing posters, banners and a welcome video for this year's event. Several large screen television monitors will provide first-class viewing. Formal attire is encouraged but not required.

HIFF's photographer, Phil Spalding III, will shoot guest photos throughout the evening and guests will receive complimentary photos after the event.
