Kanoa Leahey, Hawaii Pacific University's sports broadcaster, has become the first student from Hawaii to be awarded the Freedom Forum-NCAA Foundation Sports Journalism Scholarship.

In addition to a $3,000 scholarship, the winners will be pictured in the NCAA Men's Final Four program.

Leahey competed with students across the nation and was one of eight winners. Hawaii Pacific was the only NCAA II school to have a winner.

"My father (Jim) always refers to what we do as 'talking into a piece of tin,' " Leahey said. "I don't know how important that is to the real world, but I have fallen in love with the field of sports journalism and to be recognized for doing it well is a tremendous honor."
