Former Lt.Gov. Ing, 79,
was budget chief,
business leader

Andrew T.F. Ing, lieutenant governor for 81/2 months under Gov. John Burns, died Saturday in Maui Memorial Hospital. He was 79.

His career spanned a variety of business and government service.

Ing was a financial vice president, treasurer and director of Hawaiian Electric Co. from 1969 until 1974, and financial vice president of Maui Electric Co. and Hawaii Electric Light Co. from 1970. Ing served as Hawaiian Electric Industries financial vice president, 1974-1989, and as director, 1984- 1989. He was president of HEI Investment Corp., 1984-1989.

Ing took the oath of office as lieutenant governor on April 13, 1966, succeeding William S. Richardson, who became chief justice.

He had been with the Burns administration since 1962, as head of the Department of Budget and Finance. In Burns' second term, Ing again became budget director, serving until he left government in 1969.

Ing also was chairman of the Honolulu Charter Commission in 1972 and later chaired the governor's Commission on Operations, Revenue and Expenditures.

Among other activities, he was a trustee with Oceanic Institute, director of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and director of Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific.

Ing was born in Honolulu. A Roosevelt High School and University of Hawaii graduate, he had a master's in business administration from Harvard.

He served in World War II from 1943-1945 as Army liaison supply officer abroad and was recalled in 1951, rising to lieutenant colonel.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons Robert and Dennis; sister Florence Vaughn; brother Walter; and two grandchildren.

Services will be noon Sunday at Nuuanu Mortuary. Call after 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to St. Peters Church or Rehabilitation Hospital. Casual attire.

Author Stone, 83, focused
on human potential

Robert B. Stone, 83, author, teacher, counselor and Hawaii resident for nearly 30 years, died Jan. 8 in Thailand.

He authored or co-authored 87 books, some with sales of more than a million copies. He also published a number of magazine articles and was often called Hawaii's most prolific author.

His nonfiction works, from new age to diet books, appeared in 19 languages. “Martinis and Whipped Cream,” “Anatomy of a Teacher Strike” and “Life Without Limits” were among the titles.

He wrote with Jose Silva “The Silva Mind Control Method for Business Managers,” published in 1983, and lectured on the method, a formula for activating the brain for greater creativity and intuition.

Stone was an internationally known lecturer on human potential and was a member of the New York Academy of Science. He counseled hundreds around the world in self-healing, human relations and problem-solving.

Stone was born in New York and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1937. Among other activities, he started a firm on Long Island to serve on boards of education, businesses and nonprofit organizations and published house plans magazines at Huntington, N.Y. Stone once commented that he “evolved from home improvement, to body improvement, to mind improvement” and was “getting close to the human spirit.”

In war years 1943-1945, he served in the Army Signal Corps, becoming a master sergeant.

He is survived by his wife, Lola; son Dennis; stepdaughter Lynne and her two children; and three grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pohai Nani Auditorium, Kaneohe.

Born in South Kona, Hawaii, she is survived by sons Ronald, Robert, Wilfred, Rodney and Richard; daughter Rae Mei Ling Chang-Jablonski; brothers Henry and Lot Grace; sisters Margaret L. Henry H. Dole,84, of Honolulu died Monday in St. Francis Hospital.
