Rams swept by Wahine

Kelly Gentle won her second game of the weekend as the Hawaii softball team completed a three-game sweep of Colorado State yesterday with a 2-1 win at Wahine Stadium.

Gentle struck out four in her complete-game performance for Hawaii (14-9, 3-3 Western Athletic Conference). Joyce Lum delivered a two-run double in the third inning against the Rams (7-10, 0-3).

HPU SHUTOUTS: Hawaii Pacific's Jamie Surdock and Eric Bentley both tossed shutouts as the Sea Warriors swept a doubleheader from Christian Brothers by 4-0 scores in college baseball yesterday at Hans L'Orange Field.

WAHINE FALL: At Los Angeles, three-time defending national champion UCLA defeated No. 7 Hawaii, 8-5, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match. The Wahine (12-7, 2-2) were led by Robin Jones' two goals.

FREAS COACH OF YEAR: Hawaii coach Sam Freas was named coach of the year at the Western Athletic Conference swim meet this weekend.

Records set by the Rainbows included the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 100 freestyle.

SHERIDAN TOPS WAIPAHU: Gary Nakano and Landon Yamashiro had two hits and drove in two runs as Sheridan edged Waipahu, 8-7, in AJA baseball yesterday at the Ala Wai Field.

Also at Ala Wai, Kendall Yamatsuka's triple highlighted a five-run fourth inning as Pearl City beat Waialae, 12-2.

At Fred Wright Park, Darren Murakami had four hits and drove in three runs as Ewa beat Wahiawa, 16-2.
