Alexio fights tonight

Dennis Kaheke Alexio defends his world kickboxing championship against European champ Ricky "The Tank" Nickelson tonight at Blaisdell Arena.

Alexio, who has a home on Molokai, brings a 68-1 record with 63 knockouts into the ring against Nickelson, who is 44-3 with 31 KOs.

The undercard action begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $39, $31, $21 and $7 at the Blaisdell Box Office or charge by phone at 591-1211.

ISLE BOXERS IN NATIONALS: Ten Hawaii amateur champions will compete in the U.S. National Boxing Championships next week at Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Hawaii team: Tony Rodriguez (119 pounds), Lyndon Patricio (125), Kili Madrid (139), Jerry Saribay (147), Clay Lewis (156), Cheyenne Padeken (165), Tommy Pestana (178), Sifou Su'a (201), Jesus Libero (201-plus) and Tuese Ah Kiong (201-plus).

UH SWIMMERS THIRD: Hawaii got a winning performance from its 200-yard medley relay foursome and second-place finishes from Simon Thirsk, Nick Folker and Luis Rojas but slipped from second to third place in the team standings after the second day of the WAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Federal Way, Wash.

Going into today's finale, defending champ Southern Methodist had 496.5 points and a commanding lead over runner-up Brigham Young (380) and the Rainbows (355).

QUARTERBACK CLUB SPEAKERS: UH baseball coach Les Murakami and Wahine softball coach Bob Coolen will be among the guest speakers at the weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club, Monday at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Other speakers include Chris Shimabukuro, coach of the state high school championship Iolani softball team and Hank Sanders, the former athletic director of New Hampshire College.

Lunch is served at 11 with the program at noon.

WAHINE WIN, 1-0: Regina Ka'aihili's bloop double in the first inning scored Melissa McGie with the game's only run as the Hawaii Wahine softball team edged visiting Colorado State, 1-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Kelly Gentle last night.

EVANS, LEE ON ALL-WEST TEAM: Forward David Evans of Brigham Young-Hawaii and guard Shannon Lee of Hawaii Pacific were named yesterday to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-West Region basketball first team.

Evans set a BYUH single-season scoring record of 23 points per game. Lee, the Sea Warriors' playmaker, averaged 13.6 points and eight assists per game.
