Lindsey loses
role by a hair

Mug shot ELIZABETH Lindsey lost a good role in a Jody Foster film by a hair. Actually, it was a lot of hair. "They wanted me to cut my hair very short," said Elizabeth, whose lovely hair falls well down her back. She said no. "Anna and the King," is a remake of of "The King and I," Elizabeth said Tuesday, adding the script is "terrific." Elizabeth was to play Lady Thiang, the king's first and most important wife. Foster plays Anna and Chow Yun Fat is the king ...

Mapu's book adds a chapter

IT'S another chapter in my life," said Mapuana Baldwin Schneider, at the opening of her exhibit of watercolors at Native Books & Beautiful Things at Ward Warehouse Thursday. Mapuana's story includes being one of Waikiki's leading hula dancers in earlier years, 25 years as G.M. of the Hawaiiana Hotel and now being an owner of Fine Wine Imports. Other owners include her son-in-law, Chuck Furuya, who poured wine Thursday. Mapuana's dad, Clarence, was a Maui Baldwin and her mother, Harriet Kahoopii, a pure Hawaiian. Mapuana danced hula to the music of Puamana at the warm reception. Her children, Piilani Schneider and Mahealani Furuya, and ex-husband, Buzz Schneider, were among those applauding. The exhibit runs through March 26 ...

"ANALYZE This," the Robert De Niro-Billy Crystal comedy, is a howling success. What a fine pairing. De Niro is easily De Best in this laugh riot portraying a New York mob boss who forces a shrink (Crystal) to take him on as a patient. De Niro handles his marvelously funny lines and mangles the English language masterfully. Lisa Kudrow, portraying Crystal's betrothed, doesn't stray too far from her "Friends" character. The colorful mob characters are hilarious with Joseph Viterelli, as De Niro's right-hand man, heading the pack. There is plenty of foul language, but hey, crooks don't talk nice ...

FORTY women and one lucky guy were invited to an Italian lingerie trunk show Tuesday at the home of Jany Cataldo, next to Doris Duke's estate. The male Saturday columnist was there, strictly in the line of duty. Maria Torcia, owner of Body Balance Centre, brought in Debora Locatelli with the Intimo undies ... Attorney Jim Nicholson, the former Kansas City tackle, celebrated his 50th birthday Saturday. I bet he wishes he was at the lingerie party with me and all those beauties ... Pam Anderson has cats she wants to give to cat-lovers. Call 923-3974 ...

Funai was a winner

I TALKED with legendary baseball coach Francis Funai, 92, late in his life after writing about him. We laughed about how he snared a hot baseball player, Hal Okita, for his St. Louis team. Hal, Mid-Pac Country Club manager, was headed for Roosevelt. St. Louis grad and Bulletin reporter Rod Ohira said Funai wanted Rod to write a baseball instruction book with him. Rod wanted to give the coach a tape recorder to record his thoughts. But the coach was always too busy teaching youngsters baseball ...
