Island woman who
shot lover is well

What ever happened to Ms. Kaaiai from Hawaii, who played volleyball at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, and was involved in a shooting that left one player paralyzed?

Kimberly Kaaiai is living on the mainland and is doing well, said her father Thomas Kaaiai.

In April 1992, Kimberly Kaaiai was acquitted of attempted murder and assault with a firearm for shooting and partially paralyzing her former lover and college teammate Michelle Hansen in December 1991.

Kaaiai, an 1987 All American at University High School, testified that she accidentally shot Hansen during a scuffle. "She hit me and the gun went off," she said during the trial.

Hansen testified that Kaaiai was an obsessed lover who refused to end their relationship after Hansen began dating a man. But Kaaiai said it was Hansen's cocaine use that caused problems in their relationship.

Kimberly Kaaiai moved back to Hawaii soon after the trial, but relocated to the mainland about two months later, said her father, who declined further comment.
