UH falls to BYU
From staff and wire reportsPROVO, Utah -- No. 1 Brigham Young hit the seventh-ranked Hawaii men's volleyball team where it hurt the most last night -- at the gate and in the standings.
The Cougars drew 14,156 to the Marriott Center last night, shattering the Rainbows' NCAA single-match attendance record of 10,225. Two hours and 19 minutes later, BYU won its 11th straight, 15-9, 11-15, 17-15, 15-7.
"I think they miscounted because a lot of people came a little late," said Hawaii coach Mike Wilton. "It seemed more like 18 or 19 thousand and they were all young people, energetic and loud. It was very enjoyable, a delight. What a crowd."
The match was exciting as well as both teams battled to take control of critical Game 3. The Cougars serve for the game twice at 14-13 but Torry Tukuafu put down one of his 19 kills to tie it.
BYU again served game-point at 15-14 only to have Tukuafu tie it with a block on Ozzie Antonetti. The Cougars finally put it away after 46 minutes with two straight points.
"Game 3 was huge," said Wilton. "One team was going to fade a little bit after that one. Unfortunately, it was us.
"But I am very pleased. The whole match, but especially Game 3, was a quantum leap over our last performance (a 3-0 loss at Long Beach State)."
Sophomore Brenton Davis finished with a team-high 34 kills to lead Hawaii (7-4 overall, 3-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation). Andre Breuer added 23 kills and eight blocks while Cory Kamana'o had 17 kills and eight blocks.
For the Cougars (11-0, 9-0), Antonetti put down 41 kills.
