Raising awareness
about the environment

Molly M. Kihara wants to use her new job at Belt Collins Hawaii Ltd. to change attitudes.

"I was raised (in Aiea) with the ethic of recycling and protecting the environment," Kihara said.

"In my new position, I hope to change the perception of environmental consulting from a reaction to a problem to a more pro-active planning decision.

"Many businesses and industries do not yet see the value in strategic planning in dealing with environmental issues. They wait until they are cited for violations or are fined, and then it becomes a more urgent and very costly dilemma."

She has worked for Belt Collins since 1985, most recently as a senior environmental engineer.

Kihara also worked on the engineering staff at Radian Corp. in El Segundo, Calif., for three years.
