The men's volleyball team
lets a two-game lead slip away
and loses in five

Mike Wilton wasn't sure how or why it happened to his Hawaii men's volleyball team yesterday at Stanford's Burnham Pavilion. He just wants to make certain it doesn't happen again in today's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rematch with the Cardinal.

"It was a pretty miserable performance, by us," the UH coach said after watching the fourth-ranked Rainbows win two games and then lose three in a row, the deciding fifth by a 22-20 count. "It's scary. I don't know how to account for it.

"After winning the first two, we started playing like we were stunned. To be so in charge and then let it go the other way like we did . . . that was bad, really bad."

The Rainbows (4-2, 2-1 MPSF) won 15-4 and 15-10 before the Cardinal (2-1, 1-1) replied in kind, 15-9 and 15-5. In the marathon rally-scoring finale, the 'Bows fought off two match points but were denied on four of their own before a UH hitting error ended it. Andy Witt had 38 kills for Stanford. Torry Tukuafu led UH with 27.
