COLLEGE BASKETBALL

No. 3 Stanford sees red
after loss to Arizona

Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. -- A trip to McKale Center ended any hope Stanford had of becoming the first team to go through a Pac-10 basketball season without a loss.

"We know it's going to be a game from hell when we come to Arizona," Stanford's Peter Sauer said last night after the No. 3 Cardinal fell to the No. 13 Wildcats, 78-76.

Winning at Arizona was too much even for this deep, talented Cardinal (17-3, 7-1 Pac-10) team.

Jason Terry, who scored a game-high 29 points, made the winning shot for the Wildcats (14-3, 6-2), a spinning 12-foot jumper with 3.4 seconds left.

bullet No. 5 Cincinnati 87, Xavier 77: At Cincinnati, the Bearcats (19-1) ended two years of torment at the hands of the crosstown-rival Musketeers (15-5).

bullet No. 11 UCLA 69, Washington St. 66: At Pullman, Wash., Dan Gadzuric scored 16 points as the Bruins (15-4, 6-2 Pac-10) beat the Cougars (8-11, 2-6).

bullet Texas-El Paso 87, Brigham Young 72: At El Paso, Texas, Brandon Wolfram paced the Miners (12-7 overall, 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) with 21 points against the Cougars (8-10, 3-3).

bullet UNLV 96, Wyoming 75: At Las Vegas, Kevin Simmons scored 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the Rebels (12-7, 5-1 WAC) to a win over the Cowboys (11-6, 2-4).

bullet Fresno State 101, San Diego State 80: At Fresno, Calif., Chris Herren scored 27 points to lead the Bulldogs (14-7, 4-2 WAC) against the Aztecs (2-16, 0-6).

bullet Colorado State 93, Air Force 76: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Milt Palacio scored 25 to lead the Rams (13-5, 3-3 WAC) over the Falcons (8-9, 1-5).

bullet Rice 84, Southern Methodist 79: At Houston, Robert Johnson scored 31 points, including six in overtime, to lead the Owls (13-5, 4-2 WAC) over the Mustangs (8-11, 2-4).

bullet Hawaii Pacific 90, Western Washington 59: At Blaisdell Center, Willie Flowers erupted for 33 points as the Sea Warriors (13-6, 6-1 PacWest) trounced the Vikings (9-8, 5-6).

bullet Central Washington 92, Hawaii Hilo 84: At Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, Tyce Nasinec paced the Wildcats (16-3, 12-0 PacWest) with 25 points and 7 assists in the win over the Vulcans (6-13, 2-5).

bullet Chaminade 81, Lewis-Clark State 72: At McCabe Gym, Marcus Murphy and Stanley Martin combined for 50 points to lead the Silverswords (10-9, 4-3) over the Warriors (7-15, 4-8).
