Buffs take over
ILH lead

Punahou's Zack Stephens scored eight of his 11 points in a second-quarter blitz that buried Kamehameha and the Buffanblu went on to a 48-33 win in last night's Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys' basketball action.

Punahou (7-1) outscored Kamehameha, 19-6, in the second quarter to take an insurmountable 26-9 halftime lead.

Brandon Brooks scored 15 points to lead the Buffanblu. Jordan Vannatta's nine points was high for the Warriors (5-3).

The senior forward scored a combined 57 points in three wins this week for the Raiders hoops squad. His basket with 4:53 remaining against previously undefeated Punahou put Iolani ahead for good last Tuesday. The 28-24 victory gave the Raiders a share of the ILH first-half title as well as their sixth consecutive win over the Buffanblu.

The senior goalie made three spectacular saves in the final three minutes to preserve the 1-1 tie with Kamehameha Saturday.

bullet William Broadus, Waianae: Scored 16 points, including eight of the Seariders' 22 fourth-quarter points to pull away from Waipahu Friday.

bullet Andrew Brown, Mililani: Junior goalie finished the OIA regular-season unscored upon in nine matches as the Trojans won their fifth consecutive OIA West title.

bullet Seth Lee-Yee, Iolani: Junior fullback scored the winning goal with one minute left in a 3-2 victory over Kamehameha.

Girls' soccer

bullet Charity Drumeller, Pearl City: Scored three goals to lead the Chargers over Waipahu, 14-0, Friday. She finished the regular season as the OIA West's leading scorer (19 goals).

bullet Natasha Rivera, Radford: Scored all three of the Rams' goals Friday in a 3-0 win over Moanalua.

bullet Sarah Takekawa, Kailua: The sophomore forward scored the lone goal of the match to upset Castle on Saturday and finish as the OIA East leading scorer (8 goals). It was the first goal scored on the Knights this season.

Girls' softball

bullet Amber Juan, Sacred Hearts: The freshman leftfielder drove in three runs on a triple and a homer to lead Sacred Hearts over Punahou on Saturday, 4-2.

Boys' swimming

bullet Nick Borreca, Punahou: Won the 200 and 500 freestyle events as well as swam the first leg on the winning 200 medley relay team at Friday's ILH Invitational.

Girls' swimming

bullet Malia Tallett, Kamehameha: Won the 100 back and swam the first leg of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays at Friday's ILH Invitational.

bullet Kalaheo 800 freestyle team: Junior Michaela Keller, sophomore Megan Luis and freshmen Carly Keller and Natalie Krawciw shattered an 18-year-old meet record Saturday at the OIA relays. They were timed in 8 minutes, 12.89 seconds, besting Kaiser's 1981 record by seven seconds.

bullet Todd Fujie, Punahou: Upset defending state champion Gerald Welch of St. Louis in an outstanding 171-pound bout Friday.

Tomorrow, 7 p.m.

The two top defensive teams square off in what could be one of the lowest scoring games of the season.

Moanalua can clinch a third straight OIA West title and the division's top seed in the OIA tournament.

Moanalua's balanced attack is led by senior tri-captains Brian Green, Bryson Kamakura and Ki Deok Kwon, all of whom average about 10 points. Waianae, a good outside shooting team, is led by senior captain Nathaniel Donnell.
