Among the fireworks lighting up Honolulu at the stroke of the New Year, perhaps the brightest light shone at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

At exactly midnight, Jolinda Fortunato of Makaha gave birth to daughter Hokulani -- the Hawaiian word for "star from heaven."

Hokulani, the third child of Jolinda and husband Michael Fortunato, weighed 4 pounds, 15.6 ounces and measured 18 inches.

Daniel Kekai Alfonz, the second baby of the new year,
was born to Nilla Alfonz at 12:01 a.m. at Kapiolani Medical
Center for Women and Children.

Jolinda Fortunato arrived at the hospital Tuesday and delivered her baby by Caesarean section.

She said that delivering at midnight took her by surprise.

"It's exciting," she said about having the first baby of 1999.

A minute later, the second baby was born by normal delivery -- a son to Nilla Alfonz at 12:01.

Daniel Kekai Alfonz weighed 9 pounds, 7.4 ounces and was 21 inches. He is Alfonz's fourth child.
