Wyland at helm of
marine art business

Muralist Wyland takes over full ownership of Wyland Galleries after buying out the stake of his brother, Bill Wyland. The 12 Wyland galleries in Hawaii will remain.

"I'm glad to be at the helm at this time celebrating 10 years of business in Hawaii," said the artist Wyland.

There are 40 Wyland galleries, many in California and Florida, and Wyland owns 23 of them. Others are dealerships. The galleries employ 400 and have a $100 million art inventory.

Wyland returned to his North Shore home this month after a 50-state tour to promote The Wyland Ocean Challenge of America. The goal of the challenge was to get the roughly 67 million students in more than 120,000 schools to learn more about the oceans and the life within them.

Wyland has painted 81 giant ocean murals on building walls in six countries, starting in 1981 at Laguna Beach, Calif.
