HOW was my Christmas? If you've got a couple of hours, I'll tell you. Doubowl dip makes
for long day of footballSitting through two football games making up the historic college bowl doubleheader yesterday at Aloha Stadium sure can make you see double.
Two games, two National Anthems, two halftime shows, Michael Buffer twice saying, "Let's get ready to rrrrummmmble!" and a double dose of Tony Orlando sans Dawn, even though he sang "Knock Three Times" only once.
Talk about college football's longest day.
It probably seemed longer to the Pac-10's Oregon and Washington, which gave up a total of 96 points in losing to Colorado and Air Force, respectively.
Football fanatics sitting through both games saw 164 points scored, 87 first downs, 126 pass attempts, 76 completions, 167 running plays and 11 sacks. Also, three fake punts.
To get a perspective of the Christmas edition of Groundhog Day, here's a timeline, using the actual time of the day, not the game clock:
9:30 a.m. -- Colorado and Oregon begin pregame warmups.
10:29 -- Santa makes it official, parachuting at midfield.
10:34 -- Colorado wins toss, elects to receive.
10:37 -- Oregon's Dan Katz kicks off.
10:37:17 -- Colorado's Ben Kelly returns opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
11:02 -- Oregon's Herman Ho-Ching fumbles at his own 23.
11:04 -- Jeremy Aldrich kicks the first of his Aloha Bowl record three field goals, giving the Buffaloes a 10-0 lead.
11:17 -- Ho, ho, ho. Another Ho-Ching fumble leads to the first of an Aloha Bowl record four TD passes by Colorado's Mike Moschetti.
11:22 -- The Ducks finally cross midfield.
11:27 -- The long (50 minutes) first quarter ends.
11:33 -- Oregon's Derien Latimer scores the first of his three touchdowns, which tied the Aloha Bowl individual scoring record.
11:55 -- Despite only four first downs, Colorado goes ahead 34-14 on a 72-yard bomb from Moschetti to Darrin Chiaverini.
12:23 p.m. -- Halftime. Six quarters to go.
12:36 -- Tia, baby.
1:03 -- Damen Wheeler picks off a flat pass by Akili Smith and races 52 yards for a touchdown as CU widens lead, 44-14.
1:44 -- Moschetti's fourth TD pass enables Colorado to tie Kansas (1995) and Washington (1997) for most points by a team (51) in the Aloha Bowl.
2:03 -- Smith connects on a 42-yard scoring pass to make it 51-43 for two more records -- most points by two teams and by the loser.
2:25 -- The Aloha Bowl is over after three hours, 48 minutes. One down, one to go.
2:31 -- Moschetti and Smith get MVP awards as Air Force and Washington take the field to warm up for the Oahu Bowl.
3:17 -- Larry Beil (ESPN) moves into the TV booth, replacing Brent Musberger (ABC).
3:36 -- Air Force kicks off.
3:55 -- Jemal Singleton scores from 11 yards out to cap a 72-yard drive after the Falcons block a Husky field goal try.
4:14 -- Singleton's three-yard TD ends an 83-yard drive as Air Force's option befuddles the Huskies. They're clueless in Seattle.
4:41 -- Successful first-down conversion on a fake punt keeps drive alive and Air Force scores again four minutes later.
5:27 -- Huskies kick off to start second half.
5:42 -- They try a fake punt but fail, giving Air Force a 42-yard field goal.
6:06 -- Blane Morgan connects on 79-yard TD strike to Matt Farmer for a 38-13 lead.
6:44 -- Another Morgan TD toss makes it 45-19.
6:50 -- Washington's Brock Huard throws third interception.
7:05 -- Historic doubleheader ends with Air Force completing its best-ever season (12-1) by winning the inaugural Jeep Oahu Bowl.
