Star-BulletinOne hundred eighty executives, managers and faculty members at the University of Hawaii earn more than $100,000 a year.
They are among 3,304 jobs listed in the annual report to the state Legislature on salaries paid to UH employees at those levels.
The list does not include new UH football coach June Jones, whose reported $400,000-a-year pay falls under a separate category.
Topping the list again is Brian F. Issell, director of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, who makes $188,808 a year. He is followed by the $183,000 in annual pay earned by Barry C. Raleigh, dean of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.
UH President Kenneth P. Mortimer collects $162,312 annually, but has fringe benefits such as residency at College Hill, the UH-owned mansion in Manoa.
Others who earn more than $100,000 include mid- and upper-level administrators, college deans and directors, as well as research, medical and health school professors.
Bill Thomas, UH governmental and administrative affairs director, said yesterday that the report includes only faculty and administrators, and does not list university employees who fall under public-worker unions.
For example, some University of Hawaii employees, such as electricians and janitors, are covered by the United Public Workers unions, while others in professional and technical positions are covered by the Hawaii Government Employees' Association, he said.
Thomas said the annual legislative report, which began in 1991, doesn't include UH coaches because they fall under HGEA.
Jones, who was hired earlier this month, has reportedly agreed to a five-year deal worth $400,000 annually, the highest ever for any UH coach.
The Board of Regents next month is expected to approve the hiring of Jones and former Associate Judge Walter S. Kirimitsu, who will become the university's first general counsel. Kirimitsu's UH salary is not known.
Mortimer said this week that Jones' base salary -- the amount that comes out of the UH general fund -- will be $150,000. The rest of his pay will be raised through UH television and radio packages, and from money raised from private sector booster clubs.
Meanwhile, Athletics Director Hugh Yoshida falls just short of a six-figure annual salary, at $98,664 a year. Jim Donovan, Manoa associate athletic director, makes $65,544 a year, while Marilyn M. Moniz-Kahoohanohano, director of women's sports and an assistant athletics director, earns $63,912.
On the Big Island, UH-Hilo Athletics Director Bill Trumbo makes $64,128 a year, and UH-Hilo Chancellor Rose Tseng earns $130,000 a year.
