Shy only on the surface

Nanakuli High junior Lisa Carter is not involved in a long list of school clubs and organizations to make her resume look good.

Carter is committed to community service, said student activities coordinator Lapreal Burgess. "She's a mature student who cares for people."

She is an active member of Serteens, a service club for high academic achievers; Pacific Basin representative for the National Safety Council's Safety Congress; Leeward District representative for the Hawaii State Student Council; student member of the superintendent's design/review team overseeing comprehensive needs assessment; section band leader; and a member of the National Honor Society since seventh grade.

Carter, who has a 3.4 grade-point average, is also highly involved with "Youth in Action," founded by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

"When you really look at her, she looks like a quiet, shy person," said registrar and honor society adviser Noreen Hayamizu. "However, she has enough confidence to meet with people" and comfortably engage in one-on-one conversations with people like schools Superintendent Paul LeMahieu.

Carter, whose interests include public speaking and government issues, said she wants to attend Yale University or a college on the East Coast after graduating from Nanakuli and major in political science. "She would make a good working executive," Hayamizu said. "She's going to be out there."
