We have a 4-foot chain-link fence around our property. Our gate leading to our home is closed but unlocked. Salespeople open our gate and come knocking on our front door. Are these uninvited people trespassing in violation of our privacy? Fence makes salespeople
guilty of trespassing crimeThey technically could be accused of criminal trespass in the second degree, according to Chapter 708-814 of the Hawaii Penal Code, said Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Jean Motoyama.
In a case such as yours, a person could be said to be trespassing if he/she "knowingly enters or remains unlawfully in or upon premises, which are enclosed in a manner designed to exclude intruders or are fenced."
Such an offense is considered a petty misdemeanor.
Short of calling police, Motoyama suggested putting up a sign that says "No peddling" or "No solicitation" first. Or you might have to install a lock if you really want to keep out uninvited people, she said.
Since this is holiday time, several friends, relatives and I want to know: Is the egg in eggnog cooked to kill salmonella? Or do they use fresh eggs?
We pitched your question to Meadow Gold Dairies.
According to its milk superintendent, Meadow Gold buys an eggnog base from a manufacturer, and "we just mix in the other ingredients -- the cream and the skim milk," said spokesman Ron Sugai. The base is pasteurized once by the manufacturer and pasteurized again by Meadow Gold after it is mixed, he said. That double pasteurization should eliminate any salmonella problems, he said.
My husband and I have collected hundreds of heavy brown paper sacks from the grocery store. Even though most don't look like they've been used, the store doesn't want them back. Somebody surely could use them. Can you help?
If anyone out there can make use of the bags, call 525-8686 and leave a message.
To organizers of the Honolulu Marathon. At 5 a.m. (Dec. 13), they set off a fireworks display that literally could wake the living dead. It was so loud, it sounded like a bomb had gone off and set off many car alarms, adding to the noise. Next year, we hope that if fireworks are necessary, they set them off away from the public, i.e., off Magic Island, and warn the public beforehand. -- Anonymous Auwe
To the person who found my check in November about a month ago at Ala Moana Center between Sears and Longs Drugs. -- No name Mahalo
To airports Administrator Jerry Matsuda for his reply (Dec. 12 "Kokua Line") that it's because of security reasons that citations are issued to unattended vehicles. How is putting a ticket on the windshield going to stop a terrorist if there were a bomb in the car? That was a stupid reason he gave. They should just exercise more discretion. -- John Auwe
