Bowls to honor
4 on Christmas

Bowl Games of Hawaii will honor long-distance paddler Donna Kahakui, high school standouts Eri Macdonald and Joe Igber and Senator John Glenn at the 50-yard line in Aloha Stadium before the kickoff of the Jeep Aloha Bowl on Christmas Day.

Kahakui, who recently completed a 72-mile solo paddle from Maui to Oahu, was selected the Bowl Games Sportsperson of the Year for her commitment to excellence in her sport and her dedication to marine wildlife awareness through the nonprofit Kai Makana organization.

Macdonald and Igber, seniors at Punahou and Iolani schools, respectively, were named the Bowl Games/KHON-TV High School Athletes of the Year.

Macdonald won her fourth consecutive Hawaii prep cross-country championship.

Igber, Hawaii's brightest football star last fall, broke almost every rushing record in the books.

Sen. Glenn, the former Apollo astronaut who recently made space-flight history at the age of 77, will receive the ninth annual Mackay Yanagisawa Achievement Award. He was chosen for the award, which bears the name of the Aloha Bowl founder, because of his commitment to excellence, his support of nationwide intercollegiate athletics and his ties to Hawaii through the late astronaut, Ellison Onizuka.
