HVCB to promote isles in Portland
The Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau is taking its promotional road show to Portland, Ore., in January to woo potential visitors with a week-long schedule of activities.Hawaiian entertainment, cooking demonstrations, exhibits and product displays will be featured during the Jan. 9-17 promotion, according to the HVCB. Many of the activities, such as hula shows and lei-making demonstrations, will be held at downtown Portland's Lloyd Center, one of the region's largest shopping malls.
State Judiciary posts work online
Vendors interested in doing business with the state Judiciary can now get a list of available jobs by going online.The feature recently was added to the Judiciary Web site -- www.state.hi.us/jud -- and also includes information about the procurement process and who to contact about the jobs, according to the Judiciary.
Japan offers loans to Asian nations
HANOI, Vietnam -- Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi announced today $5.1 billion in new low-interest loans to help troubled Asian countries rebuild their devastated economies.The loans, for projects such as roads, bridges, power stations and airports, also will help Japan's sagging economy because the contractors must be from Japan.

United Technologies Corp. donated $100,000 to the renovation of the decommissioned battleship USS Missouri, according to the USS Missouri Memorial Association. The donation will be used to help turn the battleship into a floating museum memorial.
UAL Corp., parent of United Airlines, set a goal of $11 a fully distributed share for 1999 earnings, higher than analysts' average estimate of $9.35, saying it will be achieved by focusing on cost control.
