Isle small business group gets award

The federal government is honoring the Hawaii Congress on Small Business for its work in developing legislative recommendations to deal with issues important to small businesses.

The U.S. Small Business Administration will honor the congress at a conference this week in Washington, D.C.

Occupancy rises at local luxury hotels

Occupancy at Hawaii's luxury hotels rose in October despite an overall decline for the hotel industry, according to the consulting firm PKF-Hawaii.

Luxury hotels had a 73 percent occupancy rate, compared with 68.7 percent in October 1997. All other classes of hotels had lower occupancy. For the industry, occupancy slipped from 70.9 percent to 69.9 percent.

The Big Island's luxury hotels had the biggest increase of all, showing occupancy of 64.8 percent compared to 44.4 percent in the previous October.

Sun launching new version of Java

NEW YORK -- Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to introduce today an improved version of the Java computer programming language that lets developers write faster applications and give them more freedom to adapt it to their individual needs. Sun also said it will stop charging licensing fees to companies using Java.

Report: Oil output in Gulf won't be cut

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- Gulf Arab oil ministers today decided not to cut oil production to shore up depressed world prices, the secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council was quoted as saying. Jamil al-Hojeilan denied any plans for a cut in an interview with a regional television network, the Middle East Broadcasting Corp. Earlier, officials close to a three-day summit of the six-nation council said the oil ministers had decided to cut oil production starting in March. However, al-Hojeilan called the report "unfounded."
