Frances Omori, a former Hawaii resident now residing in Alexandria, Va., is among eight honored alumni recognized by the University of Northern Colorado with the Trail Blazer Award. She is a Senior Military Fellow at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., where she develops political/military policy games to assist high-level civilian and military leaders with national security policy. Her many military honors include the Navy Commendation Medal and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. She has served as an assistant to U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye.
University of Hawaii law students Clinton G. Piper and Carrie Ann K. Shirota are the co-recipients of the Arthur T. Ueoka/
Maui County Bar Association Scholarship.
The Hon Chew Hee Estate Foundation has awarded the Golden Callus Award to three Windward Oahu students to further their art education. Molly Moffet, Glenn Walker, both at Brigham Young University campuses, and Pamela White of Windward Community College have received $1,000 scholarships.
The $3,000 Margaret Follet Haskins Fund scholarships have been awarded to Frances Cobb-Adams, a Kamehameha Schools graduate, Sarah Kawa'a of Farrington, and Renee Mawae of Maui High. They plan to attend the University of Hawaii.
Hui Makaala, an Okinawan cultural organization, has granted $2,000 scholarships to Kristie Galusha of Kalaheo High School; Danielle Higa, Pearl City; Julie Hirano, Kaiser; Daniel Kamiya, Moanalua; Nozomi Kanoho, Hilo; Todd Morikawa, Waiakea; Nadine Nakamatsu, Hawaii Baptist Academy; Jennifer Nguyen, Punahou; Grayson Nose, Aiea; Joan Tamashiro, Baldwin; Leslie Tokuda, Farrington; and Rene Shimabukuro, Castle.
The Chinese Women's Club of Honolulu has awarded its 1998-99 college scholarships to Kai Ning Chan, Sally Feng, Wen Wan Liu and Steven J.K. Lum of the University of Hawaii-Manoa, and to Jason K.M. Lum of the University of California at Berkeley.
Trisha M. Murakami, a Punahou School graduate, has been named an Asian Scholar at Kenyon College in Ohio, where she is studying anthropology. She received a tuition scholarship.
The University of Phoenix-Hawaii Campus has awarded a $5,000 scholarship to Sarah Kalicki-Nakamura and $3,000 to Dawnyette Sheldon. Recipients of $1,000 scholarships are Sherry Balistreri, Teresa Ferrill and Kevin Matsukado.
Hawaiian Cement has awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Jimmy Lam of the University of Hawaii College of Engineering. He will receive the scholarship for the next two years and work as a full-time engineering intern at the cement company during the summer.
Sherrie Suzuki of Honolulu has received a $1,000 scholarship from the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She is the granddaughter of member Mildred Leong of Honolulu and will use the scholarship at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Al Imamura of Maui was named 1998 Realtor of the Year by the Hawaii Association of Realtors, the highest honor given to its members. He became principal broker of Valley Isle Realty Inc. in 1982.
Rep. Brian Yamane was presented with the first $1,000 leadership award in Public Health Awareness, sponsored by the Vikki Lianne Moritsugu Memorial fund. The award will support a nonprofit agency selected by the Hawaii Neuropsychology Community Research Bureau. Yamane was instrumental in developing programs to help patients with brain injuries.
Saichi Kawahara, a retired isle ironworker now residing in San Francisco, has won the seventh annual Clyde Kindy Sproat Falsetto Singing and Storytelling Contest in Waimea. His performance of "Kaloaloa" won him a recording contract with Hula Records. He is the leader of the Kaplakiko Hawaiian Band.
Roylinne F. Wada, former executive director of the Pacific Island Health Officers Association and assistant professor of public health at the University of Hawaii, has been appointed Technical Assistance Officer by the Office of Insular Affairs in Washington.
