Leaks still plague
roof of Capitol

The state is trying to stop leaks at the state Capitol, but not -- at least now -- to the news media.

A contractor, American Coatings, is working on a $55,000 contract to fix the Capitol's leaking roof. The repairs are expected to be completed by next Monday.

The Capitol has been leaking even after lawmakers in 1996 moved back after a $67 million renovation was completed.

Last week's rains illustrated the problem. Leaks sprouted in the fourth-floor offices of Rep. Cynthia Thielen (R, Kailua) and Rep. Bob Nakasone (D, Kahului), as they have in previous rains.

There is also a leaky roof in a section of the Capitol where some of the governor's staff works.

MOVING ALONG: Among the losers in the House organizational shuffle last week were Rep. Tom Okamura (D, Aiea) and Rep. David Stegmaier (D, Hawaii Kai).

Okamura went from majority leader to vice chairman of the Education Committee. Stegmaier lost his position as Education chairman and is now vice chairman of the Culture and Arts Committee.

Now the office shuffle has started, as offices and parking spaces are being reassigned. House Speaker-elect Calvin Say said he still does not know where former House Speaker Joe Souki's office will be.

He said he is exchanging proposals with Souki to work out an arrangement for the former speaker's new role in the House.
