Super BowlWaianae's 11- to 14-year-old champs will play the New Britain (Conn.) Raiders tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the semifinals. The national championship game will be played a week from today.
UH SIGNS SEVEN BASEBALL PLAYERS: Seven baseball recruits have signed to play for the Hawaii Rainbows next season, coach Les Murakami announced yesterday.
Three of the early signees are from Hawaii high schools -- pitcher/infielder Bryan Lee and catcher Jacob Flick of Mid-Pacific and infielder/catcher Akaniao Kozeniewski of Waianae.
The others are middle infielder Jesse Acosta of Kerman, Calif., catcher Brian Bock of Bakersfield, Calif., catcher Ryan Anderson of Odessa, Fla. and and pitcher Manuel Olivera of New York.
NO VOLLEYBALL BLACKOUT: Tonight's NCAA first-round women's volleyball match between Hawaii and Brown will be televised live on KFVE statewide despite not selling out 24 hours before the first serve.
The NCAA waived the policy that requires a blackout because it did not adversely affect the attendances.
Should the Wahine advance to tomorrow's second round, that match also will be aired live, starting at 4 p.m.
AKANA JOINS BYUH COACHING STAFF: Former Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Rainbows basketball player Jarinn Akana has been named a part-time assistant coach on Ken Wagner's BYUH staff.
QB CLUB: Guest speakers at the weekly Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon Monday will be: Hawaii men's basketball coach Riley Wallace, Iolani School boys basketball coach Mark Mugiishi and boxer Jesus Salud, who has a fight Tuesday night. Lunch at the Pagoda Restaurant is served at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at noon. The public is invited.
NEPO HONORED: Majorie Nepo, a McKinley High product, was named to the All-Tournament team at the National Junior College Athletic Association women's volleyball tournament last week.
Nepo is the freshman setter for Barton College of Kansas, which finished fourth at the nationals. Barton, which was 66-4, setting a JC record for most wins in a season, is coached by former Hawaii resident Russ Kinningham.
PBA TOURNEY: The Sam Choy's Restaurant Open, second of two Professional Bowlers Association tournaments on Oahu this month, will be played Monday and Tuesday at Aiea Bowl.
The pros will roll their qualifying blocks at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday. The 12 finalists will bowl at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday.
UH SWIMMERS STAY HOT: In the second day of competition at the Speedo Cup in Long Beach, Calif., the Hawaii Rainbows broke two more school swim records.
The team of Simon Thirsk, Ramie Darling, Greg Phillips and Nick Folker finished second to Florida in the 200 medley relay, clocking 30.43 seconds to break the old UH record of 31.66.
Folker, a junior from South Africa, went on to win the 200 freestyle at 1:38.21.
Thirsk posted a school record in the 100 backstroke, placing third in 49.21.
