Family could use
some beds, a table

Good Neighbor Fund Jane considers her family lucky. Only six months ago, they lived in a leaky tent at Aala Park, but now they are safe and warm in a housing project.

It's hard taking care of four children, two of them with learning disabilities. But Jane's love and guidance has paid off.

One daughter recently received an award for being a model student, and all are doing well in school.

Two daughters take hula lessons for free from a neighbor.

Jane was trying to get her high school diploma by going to night school, but the physical and emotional needs of her children have taken priority. She believes it is important they spend time together in the evenings, Jane says.

Even though sleeping on mattress pads is a great improvement over the hard ground, Jane would appreciate two twin beds and a coffee table or two end tables for their apartment.

If you would like to help this family, send a check to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin's Good Neighbor Fund, P.O. Box 2019, Aiea 96701. Or you can donate items to the Community Clearing House in Building 914 at the Kapalama Military Reservation on the left of Sand Island Access Road, about a half-mile beyond Kilgo's. Council OKs regulation of mag racks

Publication racks in Waikiki are going to be more regulated under a bill approved 9-0 yesterday by the City Council.

Under the measure, the city is constructing or allowing publication dispensing enclosures at 72 Waikiki locations.

Publishers will be assigned dispensing racks in separate lotteries for coin-operated and "free" machines. The fee would be $90 for three years.

City officials say the regulations are needed because of a recent proliferation of racks, creating congestion, potential pedestrian hazards and unsightliness.

The measure received support from the Hawaii Newspaper Agency, representing Oahu's two daily newspapers, and the Hawaii Publishers Association.

He is the author of 36 books on medical ethics and Jewish medical history.

Forum to note Philippine centennial

The 100th anniversary of Philippine independence from Spanish colonization will be observed with a historical forum Saturday at Hawaii's Plantation Village, Waipahu Cultural Garden Park.

Speakers at the 2-5:30 p.m. event will be:

Bullet Belinda Aquino, director of the University of Hawaii-Manoa Center for Philippine Studies.

Bullet Vicente Rafael, visiting professor in Asian studies from the University of California-San Diego.

Bullet Grace Estela Mateo, doctoral candidate in history and lecturer in the Filipino and Philippine literature program.

A historical photographic exhibit also will be shown this month in the Goro Arakawa Exhibit Room of the village.

The Filipino-American Historical Society of Hawaii put together the exhibit for the Philippine Centennial Committee of Hawaii with corporate contributions.

It depicts the 1896 Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule and the declaration of independence by the Filipinos in 1898.

It tells of the lives and struggles of the 19th-century Filipinos in search of freedom.

A viewer's guide to the exhibit provides more details of the historical events.

The exhibit opened in March at the Hawaii State Library and has traveled to public schools, university and community colleges, public libraries and community centers on Oahu and the neighbor islands.

The Philippine Centennial Committee has sponsored the exhibit and other activities this year to increase historical and cultural awareness among Filipino Americans and others in the community.

The exhibit and the forum are free to the public.
