UH swimmers
set U.S. record

Hawaii swimmers Jeff Stanford, Greg Phillips, Nick Folker and Eddie Lovell set U.S. Open and American club records for the 200-meter freestyle relay yesterday at Punahou School's Waterhouse Pool.

The UH team was timed in 1 minute, 29.38 seconds, breaking the old mark of 1:30.85 set by an Arkansas foursome coached by Sam Freas, who now coaches the Rainbows and Wahine.

"I knew these guys were faster than my old team," Freas said, "and that team set the record indoors with a thousand people screaming their heads off. This team swam outside with a couple of teammates and some Punahou students rooting for them."

The UH clocking also is the fastest in the nation this year, Freas said.

The Rainbows' splits were 22.63 seconds for leadoff man Stanford, 22.08 for Folker, 22.36 for Phillips and 22.31 for Lovell.

GARCIA SURFS ON, JAQUIAS OUT: Sunny Garcia won his third-round heat yesterday in the Rip Curl World Cup of Surfing but Kaipo Jaquias, another favorite from Hawaii, was ousted in the second round.

Among other third-round heat winners were Brazil's Fabio Gouveia, current point leader on the WQS tour, and five-time world champion Kelly Slater.

WAHINE VOLLEYBALL TELECASTS: KFVE (Channel 5) will televise the first- and second-round NCAA Tournament matches hosted by the Hawaii women's volleyball team Saturday and Sunday if tickets for both rounds are sold out by 5 p.m. Friday.

If tournament packages aren't sold out, neither round will be televised.

The first-round pairings are Nevada vs. Miami (Ohio) at 5 p.m. followed by Hawaii vs. Brown. The winners will play at 4 p.m., on Sunday, a change from the time previously announced.

HUSTON, SIMPSON IN SHOOT-OUT: Part-time Hawaii resident Scott Simpson and John Huston will join fellow touring pros Paul Azinger and Hawaii's David Ishii in the Johnny Bellinger Shoot-Out, a $25,000 event at Waialae Country Club to be played Jan. 12 in conjunction with the first Sony Open in Hawaii golf tournament.

The first of Huston's two 1998 victories was at Waialae in the final Hawaiian Open, where he set a PGA Tour record of 28-under-par 260, the most strokes under par for a 72-hole tournament.

The Shoot-Out, named in honor of the late chief executive of First Hawaiian Bank, is a 10-player elimination event over six holes.

MCKINLEY TREE SALE: There will be a Christmas Tree Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the McKinley High School cafeteria, with proceeds to benefit the Tigers' athletic program.
