Kentucky in the Rainbow Wahine
Classic basketball final
Star-BulletinThe 12th ranked UCLA Bruins had enough in reserve to hold off a scrappy Kentucky team, 64-54, in the championship game of the 20th annual Rainbow Wahine Classic yesterday.
Hawaii came up short against No. 5 North Carolina, 75-72, but earned a lot of respect in the third-place game at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UNC (7-1) started fast as Juana Brown hit three consecutive jumpers for a 6-0 lead, although play was ragged on both sides.
"It's hard to get up for a consolation game when your goals and anticipation are to play in the championship game," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "I think both teams were flat. We may have been flatter than Hawaii."
UH's first points came at 16:03 on Kyla Evers' jumper. Raylene Howard's layup at 10:51 gave UH it's first lead, and Howard's jumper with 7:05 left in the first half put the Wahine up, 18-16.
They didn't trail again until Chanel Wright gave the Tar Heels a lead (59-58) they wouldn't relinquish with 6:20 left in the game.
Wright's 15-foot jumper came in the midst of a 16-5 run that left UNC leading, 62-59, with 5:45 left.
Two minutes later, UH coach Vince Goo, who repeatedly implored the referees to call three-second violations, was hit with a technical for protesting a noncall on what he considered a lane violation on Hedy Liu's missed free throw.
LaQuanda Barksdale converted both free throws and hit a jumper nine seconds later for a 67-62 lead.
But the Wahine didn't fold. Evers nailed a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, cutting UH's deficit to 73-72. Nikki Teasley, who led UNC with 18 points, was fouled and made both free throws.
The Wahine (4-2) had seven seconds to tie, but couldn't get a clean shot, and Howard's 3-point attempt while slicing between two defenders was off the mark.
"The last 12 minutes (against Kentucky Saturday) we let down and we wanted to make amends for that," Howard said. "We're playing No. 5 in the country and it's a great opportunity for us to go out and play against the best. We tried to play better on the court today and I think we did a pretty good job of that. We lost, but we really took it to them and we're very proud of that."
"I think we played one heck of a game against the No. 5 team in the country," Goo said. "We did a lot of mental preparation for this game and I think the results speak for themselves."
Howard will have X-rays taken of the fourth toe on her left foot today. It's possible she has a hairline fracture.
Liu had an MRI on her right knee Saturday. It showed a slight peripheral tear of the medial meniscus (fibrous cartilage within a joint, especially the knee), but surgery is not required.
No. 12 UCLA 64, Kentucky 54: Down by 14 at the half, the Wildcats (5-1) began crashing the boards in the second half to close within four, 51-47, with 4:08 left.
But tourney MVP Maylana Martin grabbed five of her 10 rebounds in the waning minutes to preserve the victory for the Bruins (4-2).
"It bothered me seeing them get so many rebounds. That was my focus when I went back in," said Brown, recovering from three bulging discs in her lower back.
"It's was ugly. Three days in a row is something we are not very good at," UCLA coach Kathy Olivier said.
No. 24 Nebraska 62, Louisville 61: Brooke Schwartz converted two free throws with four seconds left to boost the Cornhuskers (5-1) past the Cardinals (3-3) for fifth place.
Illinois State 80, St. John's 65: Shandeen Hunt scored 22 points to lead the Redbirds (3-3) over the Red Storm (2-5) for seventh place.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Ebony Dickinson, St. John's; Nicole Kubik, Nebraska; Janae Hubbard, UCLA; Chanel Wright, North Carolina; Raylene Howard, Hawaii; Jaye Barnes, Kentucky. MVP: Maylana Martin, UCLA.
