Itoman, UH shut down
By Al Chase
Illinois State
Star-BulletinThe hours spent breaking down opponents film paid off for the Hawaii coaching staff yesterday.
A look at the Illinois State season stat sheet shows guard Jenny Schmidt at the top, averaging 20.3 points per game. The Redbird coaches certainly zeroed in on UH's Raylene Howard and her 22.3 points per game output.
"We expected Howard to be strong, but we don't have anyone to match up well with her," Redbird coach Jill Hutchison said.
The Wahine had BJ Itoman to shadow Schmidt, the No. 2 3-point shooter by percentage nationally a year ago, and that matchup worked for Hawaii.
Howard was 8-for-9 from the field and led UH by scoring 21 points.
The Wahine (4-0) defeated ISU, 82-56, in the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic. UH plays Kentucky today at 1:20 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Schmidt was held to 8 points and missed her only trey attempt.
"That was a big, big key because she (Schmidt) is a heck of a ball player," UH coach Vince Goo said. "BJ just did a great job on her, taking away her strengths."
"I just tried to be everywhere she was," said Itoman, who had 13 points.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Wahine took an early lead. Itoman's layup, another by Crystal Lee, two free throws by Lee, Kyla Ever's layup and Howard's short jumper in the lane and it was 10-2 after four minutes.
Starting at the 8:10 mark of the first half, Howard scored 10 consecutive points over the next two minutes (UH went up 32-18) and Illinois State (2-2) got no closer than 12 points after that.
UH freshman Aina Kohler, who broke her nose in the morning shootaround, played with a protective mask and scored seven points and had three rebounds.
Kentucky 73, Louisville 62: The Wildcats (4-0) also jumped to an early lead, 31-9, with 7:11 to go in the first half, and rarely let the Lady Cards (2-2) get their deficit under 10 points.
Jaye Barnes, Kentucky's only senior, scored a game-high 21 points.
"I thought we rebounded well and played great defense. When you do that, good things happen," said Wildcats coach Bernadette Mattox, who has her best start in four years at Kentucky.
Roscelle Bullock and Sharon Bellamy each scored 13 points for Louisville.
No. 12 UCLA 85, No. 24 Nebraska 67: The Bruins (2-2) overcame early turnover problems, took the lead at the 11:08 mark on Erica Gomez's 3-pointer and steadily built a 12-point (44-32) halftime lead.
Maylana Martin, who was born and lived in Hawaii until she was 5, led UCLA with 16 points.
The Cornhuskers (3-1) were led by Brooke Schwartz's 22 points.
The Bruins play North Carolina in today's last game.
"North Carolina is very athletic and they love to run. We're going to have to play very good defense and limit them to one shot down the floor," Oliver said.
No. 5 North Carolina 77, St. John's 67: Chanel Wright led all scorers with 33 points as the Tar Heels (6-0) advanced. The 6-foot senior guard scored 18 first-half points to help North Carolina to a 40-26 lead. She made all four 3-point attempts while shooting 7-for-11 from the floor.
The Red Storm (2-3) got 30 points from Ebony Dickinson.
