The future took part as the past looked on yesterday during the Hawaii football team's final major workout of the season. Scout-team players
finally get their shotAs he has the last two seasons, Rainbow head coach Fred vonAppen let the scout-team players dress in full pads and take turns knocking each other into the artificial turf of Cooke Field during the controlled scrimmage.
The varsity players stood on the sidelines and cheered their respective teammates. The offense was on one side and the defense on the other.
Freshman quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen looked good running and throwing, prompting recruiting coordinator Don Dillon to say, "Someday, this kid is going to be a great one.
"I'm not sure who will be the coaches, but they will be thankful we recruited him. This past recruiting season he was the best quarterback in the state."
VonAppen said that if the Rainbows had enough healthy players, he would hold these scrimmages every Monday.
"It prepares them for the rigors of Division I football if they're hitting each other at full speed," vonAppen said. "I thought the lads had some fun out there. I also thought the guys watching were very enthusiastic."
DAY OF THANKSGIVING: VonAppen held a light workout this morning before cutting the kids and coaches loose for the Thanksgiving holiday.
VonAppen said most of the mainland players would spend the day with local players and their families. He said it was impossible to hold a Thanksgiving dinner for the players.
"So many are from here and want to spend time with their families, so it's best if we work it this way," vonAppen said. "We'll meet at 7:30 and be done by 9. We're as ready as we'll ever be for Michigan."
Michigan was due to arrive in Honolulu by charter at 2:30 p.m. Wolverines head coach Lloyd Carr will hold a light workout before adjourning to the hotel.
"We are leaving early Thursday morning, and as soon as we get in we are going right to the stadium to work out in helmets for an hour and then back to the hotel," Carr said during his media luncheon Tuesday. "We will then have dinner with a group of Michigan alumni who are out there.
"Friday afternoon we are going to visit Pearl Harbor and then we're going to get into our regular Friday-Saturday game schedule."
DIIESO REDSHIRTING: Fullback Anthony DiIeso, who broke his leg early in the season, opted to seek a medical hardship rather than finish his senior season.
The Amityville, N.Y., resident played in only two games before suffering a stress fracture. He had one carry for 4 yards.
"I wasn't sure I wanted to come back, but after thinking it over, I decided I might as well," DiIeso said. "The leg never got better."
Senior linebacker Rinda Brooks, who has been out all season with a concussion, confirmed yesterday he would be back for next season.
"I deserve at least one year without getting hurt before I'm through," Brooks said.
INJURY UPDATE: Defensive backs Williams, James Polk (shoulder) and Daniel Ho-Ching (knee) will not play this weekend.
