basketball tourney
Star-BulletinLAHAINA -- The 17th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers (6-0) and the 18th-ranked Syracuse Orangemen (4-0) will meet tonight for the championship of the 15th annual Maui Invitational men's basketball tournament at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Yesterday, Indiana won the battle of tough defenses with Utah and escaped with a 52-49 victory over the Utes. Syracuse, meanwhile, converted enough free throws in the final 3:23 to hold off Michigan, 58-46.
Indiana and Syracuse met in the 1990 title game, with the Orangemen winning, 77-74.
The Utes (2-2) meet the Wolverines (2-3) for third place.
The Indiana-Utah game featured 40 minutes of unrelenting defense.
"We may have set finesse basketball back a couple of decades, but we did a lot for hard play," Indiana coach Bob Knight said.
"Both teams have decent offenses, yet we combined for 106 shots and only made 37. And despite the defense, there were few turnovers."
The Utes were guilty of 12 turnovers and the Hoosiers 13.
There were 12 lead changes in the first half, with four points the biggest lead either team managed. Indiana took a 26-23 halftime lead when 6-foot-1 junior guard A.J. Guyton canned a 3-pointer with 7.4 seconds left.
Two tough inside baskets by 6-8 freshman forward Jarrod Odle helped the Hoosiers take a seven-point lead (34-27) four minutes into the second half.
However, Utah's Andre Miller, a 6-2 senior guard, scored six of the Utes' next nine points for a 36-36 tie with 9:37 left.
The defenses stood out for the next four minutes, limiting each offense to a paltry three points.
The Hoosiers took the lead for good on two free throws by 6-8 senior forward William Gladness with 5:18 remaining. Seconds later, he converted off a pretty feed from Guyton.
Two incredible shots -- a 25-footer by 6-6 sophomore guard Luke Recker with two seconds on the shot clock, and Michael Lewis' driving, underhand scoop layup from 10 feet out as the shot clock wound down -- kept the Utes at bay.
Hanno Mattola, a 6-10 junior forward, led Utah with 17 points. Miller finished with 12, five below his average.
"Both teams played great defense. That's where we hang our hats," Utah coach Rick Majerus said.
"Indiana made some big shots and got to the ball in a couple of key situations. We're young, but we played with a lot of heart."
The Utes were hurt when 6-7 junior forward Alex Jensen, a top defensive player, missed nine minutes of the second half with four fouls.
No. 18 Syracuse 58, Michigan 46: The Orangemen geared their defense to stop Michigan senior guards Louis Bullock and Robbie Reid. The effort was successful as they combined for 12 points, 18 less than their normal output.
"We gambled on stopping their guards and gave up a few points inside," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "If someone told me we'd hold Bullock and Reid to 12 points, I'd say we'd win by 50, but our defense had to save us today."
Boeheim slid a big man out to help his guards keep the Michigan duo from getting good looks at the basket outside the 3-point arc.
Syracuse held a 22-21 lead at the half, and increased it to 11 in the first three minutes of the second half. The closest the Wolverines got after that was four points twice, the last coming with 10:51 to play.
"I didn't get too many open shots," Bullock said. "Both teams were fighting, but in the end, we couldn't get that final run to put us over the hump."
"We outrebounded them, held them to 40 percent from the floor and under 60 points, but we didn't execute well enough to score enough points," Michigan coach Brian Ellerbe said.
Kansas State 84, Arizona State 80 OT: In a consolation game, junior guard Cortez Groves scored six of his 13 points in overtime to help the Jayhawks (4-1) defeat Arizona State (2-3) after trailing by 14 points at the half.
Junior guard Josh Reid, who led Kansas State with 23 points, converted three free throws with 12.2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Tony Kitt, a 6-8 junior forward, added 22 points and set a tournament record with 19 rebounds in just 26 minutes of action.
The Sun Devils were led by junior guard Eddie House's 31 points, best in the tournament to date.
No. 22 Clemson 72, Chaminade 60: In another consolation game, point guard Terrell McIntyre paced the Tigers (4-1) with 15 points as Clemson turned back a second-half rally by the Silverswords (0-2).
Marcus Murphy led CU's comeback charge, scoring 19 or his game-high 24 points in the second half, including three 3-pointers. His bucket with 3:16 remaining cut the Swords deficit to five points, 61-56 -- the closest the host team got.
NOTES: Joining host Chaminade in next year's Maui Invitational will be Florida, Georgetown, Memphis, North Carolina, Purdue, Southern Cal and Utah State . . . Chaminade is playing without 6-5 forward Stanley Martin, who broke a wrist while falling after a slam dunk in an exhibition game. He was the Pacific West Conference newcomer of the year last season when he averaged 16.5 points per game.
