James Teal of Hawaii and Michel Demont of Tahiti beat out Miranda in Round 2, but were then eliminated in the next round.
Other Hawaii competitors who fell by the waveside were Kanoa Dahlin, Duane DeSoto, Joey Valentin, Chris Vandervoot and Danny Kalahiki.
UH SWIMMERS TO GO FOR RECORD: Four Hawaii swimmers will try to set a U.S. Open and American club record in the 200-meter freestyle relay Monday at Pearl Harbor's Richardson Pool.
The record of 1:30.85 was set in 1985 by a Louisiana State foursome coached by Sam Freas, who now coaches the UH men and women.
The Rainbows' foursome will be selected for the attempt from among six swimmers -- seniors Greg Phillips and Jeff Stanford, sophomores Nick Folker and Steven Freas, and freshmen Eddie Lovell and Ramie Darling.
VULCANS SIGN SON OF 'BIRD': Kyle Bartholomew, a 6-foot-4 senior forward for Waiakea High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Hawaii-Hilo.
The oldest son of former Vulcan Jay "The Bird" Bartholomew averaged 17 points and eight rebounds per game last season, leading Waiakea to the BIIF championship.
SEMI-PRO BOWL GAME: The Team Hawaii All-Stars will tackle the United States Americans All-Stars in the third annual Hawaii Semi-Pro Bowl football game on Feb. 6, at the Kailua High School field.
