Flag of honor

Students at Kaimuki Middle School, above, proudly show the flag
the campus was awarded after the U.S. Department of Education
selected it as one of 166 Blue Ribbon Schools in the nation. Some
115,000 schools were nominated, with Kaimuki Middle the only
one in Hawaii to be chosen for the 1997-98 school year. The flag,
which Principal Frank Fernandes received this week in Washington,
D.C., later was raised on the school's flag pole, at bottom. The school
said it is guided by its mission statement: "Kaimuki Middle School
-- a place with heart -- that challenges and strengthens
the mind, body and spirit."
