Info hunted on dog tags
issued to Ewa students

We cousins had a get-together some months ago and started talking about the old days. I said, remember the dog tags we got when we were in school when there was going to be a war (Bay of Pigs)? They all said they either did not recall this or never had dog tags. I was the only one living in Ewa, going to Ewa Elementary. Did only the kids who went to Ewa Elementary get dog tags? If so, was it because we were next door to Barbers Point Naval Air Station?

A relative of a clerk who works at Ewa Elementary School confirms your memory, said Principal Irene Nakamoto.

Sometime between 1959 and 1964, students were issued metal tags that were punched with their names, addresses, parents' names and the words Ewa, Hawaii, Nakamoto said. The tags had a hole for a chain.

But no one could remember the reason why the dog tags were issued and if Ewa was the only school to do so, she said.

We contacted a couple of other longtime Ewa residents and they also had no information.

If anyone can shed some light on the Ewa dog tags or knows of any other school that issued tags, call 525-8686 and leave a number.

Why is it that the street lights are always off from Haiku to Ahuimanu? They're off for a couple weeks, on for a couple of days, then off again. It's a dark road.

The light problem "is a concern and we're doing the best dealing with a very old system," said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Marilyn Kali.

"Another part went bad so they're off again," she said this week. "We replace whatever is broken at that time and they work for a couple of weeks, then something else goes bad and we have to get parts for that."

We heard that the postal carrier who was arrested as part of a ring that set up phony bank accounts and manufactured fake IDs to cash stolen checks, tax returns and Social Security payments is going to be delivering mail again because of a technicality that her union found. How can that happen?

She is not delivering mail now, but the U.S. Postal Service will not confirm nor deny your statement.

"We cannot comment on an ongoing investigation because of privacy issues," said postal spokeswoman Felice Broglio.

The only thing the FBI will say is that the mail carrier identified in an affidavit as being part of the alleged conspiracy has not been indicted yet for any crime.

"In this investigation that is ongoing, 10 people have been indicted," said John Gillies, the special agent in charge of the FBI's white-collar crime program in Honolulu. "Our investigation continues against a number of individuals."
