PHOENIX -- Dick Tomey, coach of the most successful football team in University of Arizona history, is about to be richly rewarded. Tomey to get fat pay raise at Arizona
The school is offering the former Hawaii head coach a five-year deal at $500,000 per year, an increase of almost 25 percent over what he is making now, the university announced late yesterday.
Tomey's contract will likely include potential bonuses for winning the Pac-10, for winning a certain number of games, or if a certain percentage of his players graduate, standard options in contracts for Arizona university coaches. It will be adjusted annually for cost of living.
The contract, if approved, will likely keep Tomey, 60, at UA for the remainder of his career. The offer comes as Arizona, 10-1 this year, prepares for a showdown with Arizona State next Friday and a certain bowl game.
Tomey's current contract, which pays him $401,351 per year, expires on Jan. 1.
UH-BYU VOLLEYBALL: Hawaii will play Brigham Young in a men's volleyball exhibition match Wednesday at 7 p.m. in 1,800-seat Klum Gym.Tickets go on sale Monday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center ticket office. The remaining tickets will be sold the night of the match at the box office.
HARRIERS HONORED: Christian Friis of Hawaii Pacific was named the Newcomer of the Year and headed a list of five cross-country runners for Hawaii schools on the Pacific West all-conference team.
Friis won the men's race at last weekend's regional meet at Bellingham, Wash.
Also named to the all-conference team were the Nos. 2 and 3 regional finishers: Ele-azar Hernandez and Jesus Villavicencio of Hawaii-Hilo.
HPU's Elinor Klang, who finished seventh, and Monique Mata of Chaminade, finishing ninth, were named to the all-conference women's team.
BYUH WITHDRAWS: Due to a lack of eligible Brigham Young-Hawaii players, the Seasiders have withdrawn from this weekend's Wahine Softball Fall Classic held at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The tournament, which begins tomorrow, will feature host Hawaii, Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific.
PREP SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: Ten Oahu high school softball teams will play in the Dunlop Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 24-28 at Palolo Park.
The teams are Kailua, Roosevelt, Kaimuki, Moanalua, Campbell, Radford, Farrington, Maryknoll, Mid-Pacific and Hawaii Baptist.
LUM SIGNS WITH USC: Pakilika Lum, a senior at Kamehameha Schools, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for defending national champion USC, the Trojans announced yesterday.
Lum had a .533 batting average, highest in the state, as a junior last season, with six home runs and 23 runs batted in.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound infielder-outfielder is a two-time ILH all-star.
GOOD SHOW FOR HAWAII LIFTERS: Powerlifters Tony Harris of Kaneohe and Anthony Leiato of Aiea finished fourth overall in their respective weight classes and each took first place in deadlift and bench press events in the 28th Men's Open IPF Powerlifting Championships at Cherkasy, Ukraine Nov. 13-15.
Harris broke the Hawaii state record in the 220-pound weight class with a total of 2,00071/2 pounds in squat, bench press and deadlift.
FOOTBALL BUS SERVICE: There will be express service on TheBus to and from Aloha Stadium for tomorrow's Hawaii-Northwestern football game.
The service will be provided to fans in the Windward and East Honolulu areas, including Hawaii Kai, Kahala, Kaimuki, Manoa, Waikiki and Ala Moana Center.
The fare is $2 each way. No change will be given, no passes will be accepted and no transfers given or accepted.

KAMAAINA GOLF AT KOOLAU: Koolau Golf Club's Kamaaina Tournament will be played Sunday at the Kaneohe course, with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start for the three-person, best-ball scramble.
After the tournament, there will be an awards ceremony, with a pupu buffet served. Live Hawaiian music will be featured in Honey's at Koolau bar and grill.
Entry fees are $60 per person or $180 per team.
