14 selected as
semifinalists for
Mosi Tatupu Award

Bowl Games Hawaii and the Maui Quarterback Club have selected 14 semifinalists for the national Mosi Tatupu Special Teams Award.

The trophy will be presented on Dec. 10 and the winner will be invited to play in the 1999 Hooters Hula Bowl All-Star game Jan.24 at Wailuku.

The semifinalists are:

Place-kickers Adam Bailey of Minnesota, Martin Gramatica of Kansas State and Sebastian Janikowski of Florida State; punters Joe Kristosik of UNLV, Aron Langley of Wyoming, Todd Selma of Purdue and Rodney Williams of Georgia Tech.

Defensive backs Keion Carpenter of Virginia Tech, Tim Curry of Air Force, Chris McAllister of Arizona and Deltha O'Neal of California; kick returner Shevan Wiggins of Nebraska, wide receiver R. Jay Soward of USC and tight end Derek Lewis of Texas.

HPU, BYUH PICKED THIRD, FOURTH: Newcomers Hawaii Pacific and BYU-Hawaii were the third and fourth choices, behind top pick Montana State-Billings and Seattle Pacific, to win the Pacific West Conference men's basketball title this season. Chaminade was No. 11 and Hawaii-Hilo No. 14 among the 16 PacWest schools.

WAHINE SIGN THREE SOFTBALLERS: Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen started his recruiting year with the recent signings of three California high school standouts -- catcher Demetria Costa of Clovis, catcher-third baseman Michelle Mumaw of Rancho Cucamonga and pitcher Sheri Oronoz of Walnut.

UH will play host to Hawaii Pacific, Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii in the Fall Hawaii Softball Classic Friday and Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Parking costs $3. Admission is free.

UH GOLFERS THIRD: The Hawaii women's golf team was third in the field of 13 going into today's final round of the 54-hole San Diego State Fall Classic.

UH's Angie Park shot a 75 yesterday for a 156 total and a share of seventh place. The Wahine had a 639 team total, 22 strokes behind leader San Diego State. UTEP's Kristen MacLaren was the individual leader at 150.
