regional playThe Seasiders (27-1) won the Pacific West Conference Tournament title on Saturday at Cannon Activities Center, defeating No. 3 Hawaii Pacific, 7-15, 15-8, 8-15, 15-5, 15-8. The Sea Warriors (26-6) are seeded second at the regional tournament.
In Friday's opener, BYU-Hawaii meets fourth-seeded UC Riverside. The second semifinal pits HPU against host CSU Bakersfield. The winners meet in Saturday's final for the berth in a NCAA Division II tournament, Dec. 4-6, at Kissimmee, Fla.
Only the regional winner will advance to the nationals. There are no at-large berths.
RAINBOWS MAKING SPLASH: Hawaii's men's and women's swimming and diving teams both are 8-0 -- best getaway in the programs' history -- after victories over visiting Cal State Northridge last Friday and Saturday.
UH SAILORS THIRD: The Hawaii coed sailing team placed third behind USC and host UC Santa Barbara at the North/South Intersectional regatta on Lake Casitas in Ventura, Calif.
Sailing for UH were Brent Harrill, Natalia Tangalin, Laura Rehg , Ursula Austin, Jeff Nelson and Molly O'Bryan.
WAHINE HARRIERS 23RD: The Hawaii cross-country team ended its season with a 23rd-place showing in a 31-team regional 5K run at Fresno State. Arizona took first place in the team standings.
FATHER, SON CLAIM TITLES: Don Andrews won the men's 70 singles title with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kiyoshi Matsuo and his son Dave took the men's 30 championship with a 6-4, 7-6 nod over Bob Beckvall in the Honolulu Senior Grand Prix tennis tournament yesterday on the Diamond Head Courts.
Other singles champions were Mike Hansen (men's 40), Rick Fried (men's 50), Jim Schwitters (men's 60) and Lurline Fujii (women's 40). Men's doubles champs were Derek Young/Curtis Kam (30), Mike Nua/Torea Ng (45), Schwitters/Kal Knappman (55) and Don Andrews/Hugh Findlay (65).
OPEN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Applications are being accepted from men's and women's singles and doubles players for the Hawaii State Open Tennis Championships Nov. 27-29 at the Hilton Turtle Bay Resort.
The entry deadline is Nov. 20.
