Star-BulletinKylie Page, the top returning scorer for the Hawaii women's basketball team, is probably out for the season after suffering an injury in practice yesterday.
The 6-foot forward landed wrong after making a layup and dislocated her right ankle.
"I was standing right there. It sounded like a basketball hitting a hollow spot on the floor in Gym II," Wahine head coach Vince Goo said.
Page was taken to Queen's Medical Center, where X-rays showed there were no broken bones. She underwent surgery last night.
"It was a compound dislocation (of the ankle) that broke the skin," UH trainer Tara Humphreys said. "This is better than a break because it did not require any screws or pins."
Page finished second in scoring (479 points, 18.4 average) in 1997-98 behind the graduated Nani Cockett. Page averaged 33 minutes a game, shot .585 from the floor, .782 from the free-throw line and was the third best 3-point shooter in the country (48-of-88, .485). Her field goal percentage was the best in the Western Athletic Conference.
Page was selected WAC Newcomer of the Year and was named to the all-WAC first team in 1997-98.
The junior from Elwood, Victoria, Australia, was being promoted as an All-America candidate by the Wahine this season.
