Slam invitesThe two 16-year-olds won the 1998 PGA Aloha Maxfli Championship. Matsumura also won the Hawaii State Junior Championship and Miyajima, the Maui Interscholastic League champ, was a member of the 1998 Junior America's Cup team.
The Nov. 17-18 Grand Slam features Majors winners Mark O'Meara, Lee Janzen and Vijay Singh, and Tiger Woods in two rounds of match play.
HALPIN, JOHNSON KINGS' CUP WINNERS: Jeff Halpin of Maui's Kaanapali Golf Course and Phil Johnson of the Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas, Calif., won the Waikoloa Kings' Cup Saturday on the Big Island course with a team low-net score of 19-under-par 267.
Halpin and Johnson finished with a six-shot edge on runners-up Steve Nicklaus and Pat Terrell. Rick Rarick and John Sanders were the low-gross champs at 292 .
Rarick and Mike Broyles had individual low-gross scores of 220, Rarick winning the top prize in a scorecard playoff.
Nicklaus, a son of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, had a low individual net of 207.
UH CREDIT CARD: MBNA America Bank, N.A., has begun marketing a University of Hawaii affinity credit card that will be available at no annual fee and with special introductory interest rates to UH alumni and students, university president Kenneth P. Mortimer announced.
The credit cards will bear the UH's name and help support the athletic programs at the Manoa campus. MBNA will contribute to the athletic department each time a UH MBNA card is used.
BYUH EXTENDS VOLLEYBALL STREAK: The nationally top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 60 matches and boosted its season record to 24-0 with a 15-3, 15-8, 15-5 victory over Hawaii-Hilo Saturday night at Laie.
All-American Arlete Silva had 12 kills, hitting .522, and Vanessa Valansi added 11 to pace the Seasiders.
HPU SOCCER TEAM LOSES: Hawaii Pacific was beaten by Humboldt State, 1-0, on Nate Betschart's penalty kick in the 75th minute of the Sea Warriors' season-ending men's soccer match yesterday at Kaneohe.
HPU lost five of its last six matches to finish with a 5-8 record.
HAWAII WOMEN THIRD IN NATIONALS: The women's team from Koko Head finished third in the recent USTA League Tennis 4.0 Senior National Championships at Palm Springs, Calif.
The Hawaii women, beaten, 2-1, by Portland, Maine, in the semifinals, defeated Kansas City, Kan., 3-0, in the third-place match.
