postseason game
Star-BulletinIolani will play a postseason football game against Konawaena at Kona Old Airport Park on Nov. 21.
Raiders head coach Wendell Look said final details for the game, which will be played in the evening, are still being worked out.
Bob Fitzgerald, president of the co-sponsoring West Hawaii Youth Council, said that the Interscholastic League of Honolulu has given its OK for the contest. It will be the 13th game of the year for both teams.
Fitzgerald coached the Wildcats from 1989 to 1993.
Damien traveled to play Konawaena in a postseason 1992 game dubbed the Macadamia Nut Bowl.
Fitzgerald said Mac Farms co-sponsored that game and will also co-sponsor this month's game.
He said he hopes to attract 3,000 to the Iolani-Konawaena game and believes the participation of record-breaking Iolani back Joe Igber will help.
"I would hope he would attract people who want to come and see one of the premier running backs in the history of the state," said Fitzgerald.
He said some Big Island residents have already had a chance to see Igber because Iolani had a preseason camp at Waiakea and the Raiders had a few scrimmages with Big Island Interscholastic Federation teams.
