UH finishes season
By Al Chase
with record 11th win
Star-BulletinHawaii scored an early goal, survived one dangerous moment in the second half and managed to hold off Hawaii Pacific, 1-0, in a nonconference women's soccer match at Ala Wai Field last night.
The Wahine ended their season with a record 11 victories, the last two shutouts for senior goalkeeper and co-captain Amanda Paterson.
The Sea Warriors came close to ending with a winning record for the first time since going to the varsity level four years ago, finished at 5-6.
UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing was concerned at practice last week that the Wahine would not be able to shrug off the disappointment of not qualifying for the Western Athletic Conference playoffs and might take HPU too lightly in the season finale for both teams.
The psychological effect of not going to the playoffs was clearly evident, especially in the first 10 minutes, when the Sea Warriors controlled the action. The Sea Warriors, however, were not able to turn the advantage into goal scoring opportunities.
When the tide turned, Wahine senior midfielder Tui Moe worked the ball close to the HPU goal line on the left side. She turned on the defender and crossed the ball. It went to UH midfielder Jennifer Starsiak and off HPU defender Tara Palama's knee to Tricia Nishikawa, who scored from nine yards out.
That happened at 15 minutes, 45 seconds of the first half. Control remained with UH much of the half and was repeated in the second half, but the back of the net seemed off limits. The tenacity of the HPU defenders combined with questionable ball work at inopportune times by the Wahine negated several scoring chances.
A lackadaisical play on a bouncing ball by UH defender Erin Schremser 12 minutes into the second half presented HPU with a golden opportunity to tie the score.
Katarina Noren raced in on Paterson, who was retreating slowly from the 18-yard line back toward the goal. Noren elected to shoot at about the 18-yard line, but shanked the shot wide right.
"It would have been nice to finish with a good game, but our comfort with the ball deserted us today," Tenzing said.
Paterson gave her final season with the Wahine a mixed review.
"We were very disappointed not to make the WAC (tournament). We lost that one crucial game to San Jose State," she said. "As a whole we've won 11 games and broken many, many records and that's good."
Fellow co-captain Wendy Miyashiro said, "We did a lot better than I expected. We put up a lot of good wins and I expect us to come back twice as good next year."
HPU head co-head coach Mark Kane said his team made progress after a slow start on a season-opening road trip.
"I thought we became very competitive in our first year in (NCAA) Division II," Kane said.
WARM ALOHA: Senior defender Tara Palama, the only four-year letter winner from HPU's first season on the varsity level, and senior midfielder Erika Evans, closed out their careers fro Hawaii Pacific last night.
