
The Hawaii International Film Festival opening night reception will honor actress Joan Chen, whose first film, "Xiu Xiu -- The Sent Down Girl," will kick off the festival. Chen stars at HIFF
opening receptionChen, a former HIFF judge and Shanghai classically trained actress who has appeared in a number of trendy American films, will attend the fund-raising reception. It takes place at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Indigo Restaurant near the Hawaii Theatre Center, where "Xiu Xiu" premieres at 6:30 p.m. the same night.
Tickets for the reception and the film showing are still available: $50 for the reception and $10 for the film.
Other reception guests include critic Roger Ebert, Hawaii's Miss Universe Brook Lee, actress Rena Owen, director Abel Ferrera, Star Trek's Garrett Wang and director Marilou Diaz-Abaya.

Ukulele Lessons are offered 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 10-11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. except Thanksgiving and Christmas days, on the ground floor of the Center's Hibiscus Court.
Haku lei lessons are 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays in the Orchid Court on the third floor.
