Campaign '98

The world is watching

THIS election, Hawaii is center-stage. Never since statehood have so many eyes, ears, hopes and fears focused on how Hawaii casts its ballots.

It's not because of the gubernatorial race. In that, we're blessed with two able candidates. Linda Lingle's candidacy allows voters to opt for significant change, while the resolute incumbent, Ben Cayetano, has learned to listen, respond and move in positive directions. We think a Lingle vote is a vote for two-party democracy and a signal that Hawaii is open for business. A change of administrations would bring new blood and ideas into government. I'll vote for her. Your mileage may vary.

It's because Alaska and Hawaii, the nation's 49th and 50th states, have important gay rights issues on their ballots. If Hawaii refuses to quash same-sex marriage, we'll break new ground. That's frightening for many of us.

People say Hawaii has an inferiority complex. We cherish our uniqueness and local values, but we worry about what we think the rest of the world thinks about us.

When I came to the islands years ago, I learned that our preeminent local value is aloha, a gift we shouldn't worry about sharing.

Aloha is not denial. Aloha is not judgmental. Aloha does not care who you are or whom you love. Aloha does not embrace hate, but it does embrace commitment, companionship, faithfulness, devotion and compassion.

Aloha. It's a good reason to vote "no."
